As of July 5, 2010, smoking in public places was banned across the state of Wisconsin. Businesses and workplaces around the state are affected by this new law, but tavern owners seem to be the most concerned. Many are worried that their business will decline if their patrons are unable to smoke in their establishments. WisconsinEye traveled to various bars, taverns, and supper clubs around the state to talk to those affected by the smoking ban.

In the wake of the healthcare reform debate, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) weighed in on the issues facing their members. WisconsinEye Host John Powell spoke with Al Majkrazak, President of AARP of Wisconsin, and Robert Romasco, President Elect of the National AARP, Class of 2012, on June 22, 2010 at the WisconsinEye studios in Madison.

On March 15, 2010 John Powell interviewed John Wiley, interim director of the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, regarding the status of the new research center which open December 2, 2010. Funding issues at the federal and state levels for research was also discussed. The interview took place at the WisconsinEye studios in Madison, WI.

WisconsinEye host John Powell spoke with Keith Warnke, Big Game Ecologist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at the WisconsinEye Studios on December 18, 2009 to discuss the 2009 Deer Hunting Season and the concerns and controversy surrounding the low number of reported deer in the state.

Heather Burian discussed deer management issues and deer hunting with experts, Keith Warnke, Bureau of Wildlife Management, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources; Scott Craven, Chair of the Wildlife Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and Tim Van Deelen, Assistant Professor, Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This year's deer population estimates, an update on chronic wasting disease, hunter safety and the upcoming deer hunting season were discussed. WisconsinEye's Meredith Clanfield investigates the current economy's impact on higher education in the state. With budget cuts, unemployment, and an increased need for financial aid, WisconsinEye asked students, legislators, and higher education officials to weigh-in on the issues.

Thomas Devine, Executive Director of Serve Wisconsin discussed trends in volunteerism with WisconsinEye contributor Janine Schenborn. Serve Wisconsin, also known as Wisconsin National and Community Service Board, oversees AmeriCorps funds in the State of Wisconsin. The discussion took place at WisconinEye's Madison studio on August 31, 2009.

AARP Wisconsin State President Al Majkrzak and Community Outreach Director Mariann Muzzi discussed AARP Wisconsin’s legislative priorities surrounding Congressional health reform in an interview with WisconsinEye contributor John Powell. The discussion took place on August 12, 2009 at the WisconsinEye Studio in Madison.

WisconsinEye host John Powell moderated a panel discussion about current issues facing the court. John’s guests included four Dane County Circuit Court Judges: Honorable C. William Foust, Branch 14; Honorable Sarah O'Brien, Branch 16; Honorable William E. Hanrahan, Branch 7; and Honorable Shelley Gaylord, Branch 6. Chris Long, President and CEO of WisconsinEye discussed the first two years of the network — how it began, where it is now, and its continued growth — with WisconsinEye Contributor Jason Fischer in an interview from the station's Madison studio on July 21, 2009.

Cyber security consultant Michael Mylrea stopped by the studio and spoke to Denise Rocha about cyber terrorism, cyber policy and government/private sector cooperation.

Wisconsin Conservation Congress (WCC) Chairman Edgar Harvey and DNR Liason Kurt Thiede discussed WCC's 75th Anniversary in an interview with WisconsinEye from the station's Madison Studio on July 10, 2009. WisconsinEye contributor John Powell hosted the discussion.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Program Manager Dennis Schenborn and Marketing Director Rachel Piacenza discussed an uptick in Wisconsin fishing license sales in an interview with WisconsinEye from the station's Madison Studio on May 15, 2009. As part of WisconsinEye's series Perspective Wisconsin, First Lady Jessica Doyle, Wisconsin Covenant Director Amy Bechtum, and Timaira Green, a student at Madison West High School were interviewed by John Powell in the WisEye Studio on Thursday, February 19, 2009. The discussion focused on the Wisconsin Covenant Program, where students sign an agreement to ensure a place in higher education.

John Powell hosted a discussion about financial aid and state investment in higher education from the WisEye Studio in Madison on January 21, 2009. Guests included President Kevin Reilly of University of Wisconsin System, President Dan Clancy of the Wisconsin Technical College System, and Dr. Rolf Wegneke of Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.

John Powell hosted an interview with Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton and State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster to discuss the Wisconsin Task Force on Arts and Creativity in Education. The interview took place at the State Capitol on January 6, 2009.
